Linda @ Painted Whyte July 8, 2010

I need some help from my wonderful followers and blog buddies!  The other day i did the tour of my favorite thrift stores and found a square coffee table for $8 so that went in the back of my car and then i spotted these two beauties.  This is what i need help with - should i paint the antique bronze white or do i leave it???  Are they beauties or was it temporary insanity?  My boyfriend thinks they are butt ugly (but he is the one that thought Ikea blue on the walls in the living room and bright red curtains looked good so i obviously can't go with what he says, right?)

I picked this next treasure up yesterday.  She was actually saved from the garbage.... i can't believe someone would throw this beauty out.... what ever did she do to deserve such a fate?  My boyfriends mom and step dad found her and gave to me to give her a new and better life.  Her original purpose was to hold silverware but i'm thinking she would make a fantastic jewelry box!  What do you think?

Anyway, please comment and tell me what you think about my new lamps.  In the next couple of days i will have another before and after transformation to show you.  I love before and afters don't you?

I love the drawers and I think a jewellery holder is a fabulous idea Linda. I have been seeing them around a lot lately! I think you should paint the lamps. Hard to tell the colour of the body on my pc screen but I think the brass would look smashing painted black and teamed with the right shade! Can't wait to see what you do with them. xx

I going to chant with the rest, paint it. I can see the lamps painted and distressed to bring out the lines. As for the silverware chest that is going to be adorable white too. Have fun and happy painting.

Hi Linda....!

Such WONDERFUL finds....Can't wait to see your FABULOUS jewellery chest painted....hmmmmm....I agree with your other readers that painting the lamps is 'the go'....I think I'd opt for a metal paint like 'oil rubbed bronze' which I believe is available in a spray bottle....Have a look at apennysaved dot com at the 'Candlestick + Pot Lid = $9 DIY Schoolhouse Light Fixture' entry from the 25/01/10....The colour is AWESOME....!

Cheers for now,
Tamarah :o)

Be sure to give us a look when you're done....!

Cheers,
Tamarah :o)

Why can't I find items like that in my garbage??? Anyways, I love the lamps. I think you should spray paint the entire lamp, including the antique bronze details in one single colour - a light blue, or yellow perhaps?

I agree with painting the brass black and leaving the glass part original. But you know how much I like black! lol

Yes I agree with everyone else! I would paint the lamps - they will look great! The jewellery case is gorgeous! Also Linda, if I could ask your advice about my coffee table, I have done two coats so far, a primer/undercoat and one coat in a low-sheen paint. It looks a little flat and I was wondering if you would suggest the final coat to be in a gloss or semi-gloss? What do you usually do? Thanks for your help!

Thank you everyone for your awesome advice! Not one of you said not to paint so i will be painting. I just need to decide on the colour but that would be alot easier if i knew where they would go... bedroom or livingroom?? Not sure yet. I will forsure write a post about this when i'm done with lots of pictures. Thanks again everyone for all your wonderful and helpful comments!

I would try to find the right shades first and paint them depending on what color would be best. My first thought is to spray them in that Heirloom white spray paint. And sand back the edges of the metal. I am doing a post this week where I did exactly that on a bed frame. Let me know if you like it!

A bit late to the party, but still. I would also paint the brass parts and I also thought of black to begin with. But a really nice very dark cocoa brown would be gorgeous too?
You could leave the bits gold (encasing the light bulbs, and maybe the central stems), which would look really nice with brown. But it would have to be a very, very dark brown.

I am with Tamarah, I would give the lamp base an oil rubbed bronze finish. Something dark and rich. I thinke they are gorgeous. They remind me of the lamps on the home page of my website....I chose that photo party because of the gorgeous retro lamps. www.razmataz.ca
